Dominican Sister of Peace Marina Gibbons, OP (101), a native of Chicago, Illinois, died on January 28, 2026, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Marina is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 79 years, Sr. Marina earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/Philosophy/History from Manhattan College (New York City, NY); a Master of Arts in Library Science from Rosary College (River Forest, IL); and a Ph.D. in English Literature from St. Louis University (St. Louis, MO). She ministered as a teacher at Resurrection (Brooklyn, NY); Mt. Trinity Academy (Watertown, MA); Rust College (Holly Spring, MS); and Brooklyn College (Brooklyn, NY). Sr. Marina was a Teacher/Academic Dean and President of Siena College (Memphis, TN). She served on the former leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY). In 1978, Sr. Marina ministered as Superintendent/President of St. Agnes/St. Dominic (Memphis, TN). She served in this role for many years. In 1994, Sister traveled to Vietnam to teach English in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding areas. In 1996, she became Vice-President/Academic Dean of St. Catharine College (St. Catharine, KY) she served in this role until 2001. From 2002 until the closing of the college in 2016, Sister spent many years volunteering in many capacities. She also provided community service at St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY.
In 2020, Sr. Marina moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. Sister chose cremation. The cremains visitation begins at 3pm, Wednesday, February 11, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, February 12, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
